George Washington Carver

Born into slavery in Missouri. At Tuskegee he taught crop rotation to farmers whose soil had been ruined by cotton, and made peanuts and sweet potatoes worth planting instead. He refused to patent most of what he found, on the grounds that it belonged to everyone.
