Benjamin Banneker

Astronomer and mathematician, born free in Maryland. Published almanacs computed by his own hand, helped survey the boundaries of the district that became Washington, D.C., and sent Thomas Jefferson a letter putting the case against slavery to the man who had written that all men are created equal.
