The brief

The money for the work, and which of it you cannot apply for

The largest awards for artists in America are not open applications. They are nominated. Knowing which is which is the difference between a year of submissions and a year of being seen by the people who nominate.

The Joan Mitchell Fellowship is nominated, not applied for

Fifteen US artists a year in painting and sculpture, $60,000 unrestricted, paid over five years. There is no application form. The Foundation asks its nominators and jurors to put forward artists of color, women artists, LGBTQIA+ artists, disabled artists, artists who came up outside the usual route and artists living away from the big cities.

Its residency is an open call, and it is in New Orleans

Six or fourteen weeks at the Joan Mitchell Center. Eligibility is either a New Orleans connection — based there five years, or a native — or being a former Foundation grantee from anywhere in the country. The 2026 cohort was 31 artists.

Creative Capital and United States Artists are the other two names

Both fund individual artists rather than institutions, which is rarer than it sounds. Read their eligibility windows early; both run to a calendar and both close.

The NEA funds projects, and it funds through organizations more often than people

Grants for Arts Projects is the main federal route. If you are an individual, the practical path is usually a fiscal sponsor or a partner organization applying with you.
